Workers' comp for drywall, flooring, and painting crews
Coverage for interior finish trades, billed with payroll, including help sorting out 1099 crews.
Your class codes
- Drywall: usually class 5445
- Flooring: usually class 5478 for carpet, vinyl, and other floor covering; tile and stone can be coded differently
- Painting: usually class 5474
The carrier sets your final codes based on what your crew actually does.
Exterior painting
Interior painting is straightforward. Exterior painting above two stories means a lot of ladder and lift work, and some PEOs rate it close to roofing. Tell us how much exterior work you do and we'll find out whether our partners will write it.
Florida rules
Finish trades are construction under Florida's comp law. Coverage starts with your first employee, owners count unless exempt, and no more than three officers can file exemptions.
1099 crews
Finish trades often pay installers and hangers on a 1099. In Florida construction, a 1099 worker without their own comp policy or exemption can count as your employee for comp. If an auditor decides they're employees, their pay gets added to your premium. Getting them on W-2 through a PEO can be cheaper than finding out at audit.
Benefits
Good hangers and installers move between contractors constantly. Benefits through a PEO give them a reason to stay. How benefits work.
What to have ready
- Headcount and last year's payroll, split by drywall, flooring, and painting
- Your current declarations page, if you have a policy
- Loss runs for the last 3 to 5 years
- Which subs you use, and whether they carry comp
None of it is needed to start a quote.
Questions
My installers are all on 1099. Do I need comp?
Possibly. In Florida construction, workers without their own coverage or exemption can count as your employees for comp. We'll go through it on the call.
Do you quote tile setters?
Yes. Tile and stone work can be coded differently from other flooring, so tell us about it.
Find out what your crew would pay
Tell us your trade and headcount. We'll shop it with our PEO partners and send you a side-by-side against what you pay now, usually within one business day.
